MONDAY 24th May 2021
TUESDAY 25th May 2021
The Polish School organised a meeting about the importance of water, especially in some places of the world where it is rare, like in Africa.
In particular, they invited Dr. Konrad Czernichowski, a University professor, who talked to the students and teachers about the importance of water in the example of Cameroon in Africa, where he has been in and has worked at for a long time, mostly as part of Erasmus+ programs. It was really interesting to learn so many things about life there. We saw that things that we consider natural and things we take for granted in our countries in Europe are really so difficult to get or even have access to in Africa.
He spoke about the role of nature and the environment in the life of the Africans.
He presented the everyday way of African life with photos. We saw dry lakes and rivers, dry land, thirsty and hungry people and animals. Focusing on the people's struggle to get water in order to live, he also presented social problems the Africans face, such as access to education, lack of teachers, lack of medical treatment, diseases etc.
After that, our students were asked to pose any questions they had.
It was really astonishing how many things our students wanted to learn about this country and continent.
Later, in our classes, we talked about everything we had heard and we decided to try to find a way to come into contact with a school in Africa, help it and start a communication with its students. Let's see what we will achieve!!!!!
The Romanian School talked about the importance of wetlands in terms of their biodiversity features. In particular, they presented Saru Dornei Peat bog.
We learned many things about bogs.
A bog or bogland is a wetland that accumulates peat, a deposit of dead plant material especially mosses. It is one of the four main types of wetlands. They are often covered with shrubs rooted in the moss and peat. The gradual accumulation of decayed plant material in a bog functions as carbon sink.
Bogs occur where the water at the ground surface is acidic and low in nutrients. Water flowing out of bogs has a characteristic brown colour, which comes from dissolved peat tannins. In general, the low fertility and cool climate result in relatively slow plant growth, but decay is even slower due to low oxygen levels in saturated bog soils, which makes peat accumulate. Large areas of the landscape can be covered many meters deep in peat.
We were also shown pictures and maps depicting the places in Europe where bogs usually exist. Saru Dornei Peat bog is a bog in Romania and we also learned that there are a lot of them in Northern Europe and in G. Britain and Ireland.
After that, they Romanian school presented a very interesting film about Nature in their country. We had the chance to learn about everyday life in the villages, their festivities, their traditions and customs and admire amazing landscapes. Our students attended with great interest and then posed questions to the Romanian students about what they had presented.
THUSDAY 27th MAY 2021
It was the Greek school's turn to organize activities for that day.We organized two different activities. Our topic was "the forest, our friend", so we focused on the importance of the forest in our life and our area in particular. To that end, we invited Mrs. Sylvia Zakak, a biologist, representative of the Environmental center of Dadia forest to talk to us about sustainability of the forest and the importance of the forests in our life. We were presented with all the forested areas that exist in Greece, their flora and fauna and then we watched an interesting video about Dadia forest and its importance to the local, national and international environment, mainly due to the rare species of birds of prey that live and reproduce there.
After that, we had a second activity.
We had asked Mrs Kiki Tsalaldimi, a climber and mountaineerer to talk to us about "Safe hiking". We were amazed to watch and hear all the interesting things she had to say to us, especially by boosting the students confidence to always try to fulfill their dreams and achieve their goals. Just like what she has achieved in her life, which to our ears sounds extraordinary and unbelievable!! After reaching many mountain tops all over Europe she made her dream come true when she reached mount Everest in the Himalays! We all listened to her with great enthusiasm while watching her extraordinary video showing her attempt up to the top. She really is an amazing woman and we thank her for sharing her experience with us. She will surely be an inspiration for our students.
