22. Activity: "In the footsteps of endangered species of birds"

Watching Birds of prey at Dadia-Lefkimi-Soufli National Park

The aim of this activity was to learn about locally protected species of birds, their appearance and  habitat, in order to create conditions and possibilities for students to build a direct contact with Nature. enhance their interest in it, develop a positive emotional relation with it and broaden their emotional relation with it. To that end, the students visited Dadia National forest in order to watch the protected species of vultures and other birds of prey that live there.

The Dadia-Lefkimi-Soufli Forest National Park is one of the most important protected areas at national, European and international scale. It is one of the first areas in Greece to be declared as protected since a great deal of flora and fauna species found in the Balkan Peninsula, Europe and Asia coexist here. The landscape mosaic formed by pine and oak forests, interrupted by clearings, pastures and fields is the ideal habitat for birds of prey. The National Park hosts three out of the four Vulture species of Europe (the Black Vulture, the Griffon Vulture and the Egyptian Vulture), while it is home to the only breeding population of Black Vultures in the Balkans.

The information and the pictures collected on that trip, together with information on these birds found in Literature and on the Internet were used to prepare and create an album which was created by the students in the computer lab using:  yumpu.com / Flip pdf. You can see it here:

23. Activity: "In the footsteps of migrating birds"
Visit to the Delta of the river Evros

Thanks to our town's  location, very close to the Delta of the river Evros, our students had the opportunity to visit the Delta, get informed about the migrating birds that live there, watch the birds with binoculars, analyse their route and find the reason for their migration.

 The students learnt that:

The great variety of the types of vegetation of the Delta of the river Evros composes a diverse mosaic. The rare flora and fauna that characterize the area are a result of  the effects the wetlands get from their favorable geographical location.  The Evros Delta is home to a wide variety of birds and animals unique in Europe. For example, 316 bird species have been recorded here, a number which is particularly high when compared to the total number of species recorded in Greece - 425 species.

24. Activity:  "Forest in winter time"
       February 2020

The students of 6th grade visited the "Plane tree area" - "Πλατανότοπος"  in Maistros, a village close to our town . It is a place full of plane trees where the students had the opportunity to enjoy nature in winter time. The purpose of this trip, was to branch out students' knowledge about nature, to enable them to get to know Nature in a plysenosrial way, to eliminate fear from direct contact with nature even in winter time and at lower temperatures, to let the students know the natural and cultural heritage of the place, to lower stress and hyperactivity.  The crucial point in the planning of this trip was to let students have spontaneous fun, even in cold weather. To that end the students participated in a variety of activities-games close to nature.

The students played 2 games.

1. Max. 12 students.

The students were given cards with birds with information at the back. They had to study this information and try to remember as much as possible. Then the students stood in a circle and they started coming in the middle one by one describing the bird they were given.

All of them had to pay attention to that because they had to answer certain questions later and ckeck what they could remember. The student who could remember all the information was the winner.

As the students were standing in a circle the teacher in the middle was asking questions and was throwing the string to a student at random who had to answer and throw it to another student. The result was the creation of a web which connects all the students together.

 2.  In pairs.

The students were divided in pairs. One of them was blindfolded and the other one was his/her guide offering instructions. The aim of this activity was to make students focus on all other senses apart from sight. The students admitted that they could feel, hear and smell nature better that way.

26. "Birds wall-to-wall.    (P13)

The action is based on observing the birds which accompany us throughout the year  and those which come to out country in spring and Winter. During the Environmental Studies Class, the students talked about them, took photographs and presented them in class and school.

27. "Making a multimedia presentation or writing a story influenced by their contact with Nature"     (P16)

The students got inspired by Nature and wrote a poem during the English Class both in Greek and English. Later, with the help of the Music Teacher, it was composed into a song and  finally the students sang it.  The song sends an environmental message to teh world urging people to take care of the planet.

aaaaaaaaaaaaaa

Look at our world, look at the Earth,
Our natural forests disappear along with her,

And the world around us is as angry as can be
and is looking for salvation
for some hope to appear
Ah, ah, aaaaaaaaaaaaa
ahaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa

We are the people, we are the animals, we are the plants
all together we can make the Earth run
Stop polluting, stop dropping litter,
Make a difference

28. "Welcome to our school yard"  (P18)

The students, with the help of the Physical Education teacher, created a school yard with domesticated plants, such as vegetables and herbs. The students laerned about some principles of gardening, like preparing the soil, sowing seeds and looking after the plants. The students made observations and documented their actions. The aim of the acivity, among other things, was to eliminate the students' fear from a direct contact with Nature, lower stress and hyperactivity developmental deficit levels. Moreover, it gave the students the opportunity to get to know nature in polysensorial way. The purpose of the action was to brunch out the students interests in Nature and to develop a positive emotional relationship with it. The students will have a school yard companion with instructions on how to know the plants with their senses and how to use them.

The camping trip was an opportunity for our students to have a direct contact with Nature, to brunch out their knowledge about Nature, to lower their stress and hyperactivity. They were informed about the rules of safe camping. The purpose of the camping trip was to give students the chance to have fun close to Nature. The task was directed towards the principal objective of the project, that is to diminish the number of students suffering from a deficit of Nature syndrome and to eliminate their fear with contact with NAture.
